BURKE COUNTY, N.C. — The Burke County Sheriff’s Office handled nearly 2,900 calls for service and made 128 arrests during August, according to the agency’s monthly activity report from Sheriff Banks Hinceman.

The report provides a look at the work performed by deputies and staff throughout the month, including calls for service, arrests, inmate activity, civil papers served, concealed carry permits, fingerprinting and narcotics seizures.

Nearly 2,900 Calls for Service

The sheriff’s office reported 2,900 calls for service during August, along with 210 reports taken and 128 arrests.

The number of calls for service was slightly lower than July, when the agency recorded 2,920 calls. Arrests, however, increased from 125 in July to 128 in August.

Narcotics Seized

Narcotics enforcement remained a significant part of the sheriff’s office activity during the month.

According to the report, deputies seized:

  • 45.3 grams of methamphetamine

  • 63.81 grams of fentanyl

  • 7.97 grams of mushrooms

  • 3 grams of marijuana

  • 2 Suboxone dosage units

The sheriff’s office estimated the combined narcotics seized had an average street value of $7,001.15.

Inmate and Transport Activity

The average daily inmate population during August was 194, with a total of 272 inmates booked during the month.

The State Transport Team, which transports inmates to other jails, prisons and mental health facilities, made 43 trips during August and traveled a total of 7,364 miles.

Civil and Concealed Carry Services

The sheriff’s office also processed a significant number of administrative and civil matters.

A total of 379 civil papers were served during August, including:

  • 106 civil summons

  • 76 magistrate summons

  • 197 other civil papers

The office also issued 194 concealed carry permits, including 34 new applications and 160 renewal applications.

Additionally, 72 fingerprints were processed for purposes including employment, concealed carry permits and licenses.

Six-Month Comparison

The report also includes a comparison of activity from February through July.

Calls for service during those six months ranged from 2,409 in February to 3,133 in March, while arrests ranged from 97 in February to 142 in April.

Narcotics seizures also varied considerably from month to month. July saw the highest reported average street value of narcotics seized during the six-month comparison, at approximately $518,328.40, while May followed at approximately $308,347.75.

The August report reflects the broad range of responsibilities handled by the Burke County Sheriff’s Office each month, from responding to emergency and non-emergency calls to making arrests, transporting inmates, serving civil papers and conducting narcotics investigations.
