After six weeks of political gridlock, the federal government shutdown may finally be moving toward resolution. Over the weekend, the Senate advanced a funding measure that would reopen government operations through January 30, 2026.

The program, called Carolina Healthworks, is described as a “multiple employer welfare arrangement” offered by Blue Cross North Carolina and the North Carolina Chamber.

“Medical debt is a tremendous weight keeping so many families from financial security, and unlike most other forms of debt, it’s not a choice,” said Governor Stein. “Today’s announcement will free people from financial stress so they can focus on getting healthy.”

The Open Enrollment Period began on Oct. 15 and will run for eight weeks to give you enough time to review and make changes to your Medicare coverage. Changes must be made by Dec. 7 to guarantee your coverage will begin without interruption on Jan. 1, 2026.
