Sheriff’s deputies in Iredell County are investigating a burglary reported last week at the North Carolina home of late NASCAR driver Greg Biffle, weeks after he and six others were killed in a plane crash, authorities said Wednesday.
An incident report from the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office says the alleged burglary and forcible entry at Biffle’s Mooresville residence was reported Jan. 8. Sheriff Darren Campbell said investigators believe someone entered a safe inside the home.
About $30,000 in cash, a backpack, firearms, and racing memorabilia were reported stolen, according to Campbell and the incident report. No one was inside the home at the time, and the residence was last known to be secure the afternoon of Jan. 7. No suspects have been identified.
“We’re working the case. We are waiting on some digital evidence,” Campbell said, adding that investigators are also conducting interviews.
Biffle, his wife Cristina, their two children, and three others were killed Dec. 18 when a business jet crashed in North Carolina. Federal officials said the Cessna C550 erupted into a large fire after striking the ground short of the runway while attempting to land at Statesville Regional Airport, about 45 miles north of Charlotte. No cause of the crash has been released. WAME, sister station of WCAB, both owned by Signal Hill Media, was the first news outlet to report the incident.
The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating. Officials have said three people on board held pilot licenses, but it has not been determined who was flying the aircraft at the time of the crash.
A public memorial service for Biffle and the six others is scheduled for Friday morning at Bojangles Coliseum. The service is open to the public, with a live stream planned on NASCAR platforms.
Biffle competed in 515 races in NASCAR’s Cup Series from 2002 to 2022, winning 19 times. He was the 2000 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series champion, the 2002 NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series champion, and was named one of NASCAR’s 75 Greatest Drivers in 2023.
Local officials in Mooresville have also announced a public tribute event, “Burnout for Biff,” scheduled for Friday afternoon along Main Street in downtown Mooresville, citing Biffle’s impact on the racing community and the town.
The burglary investigation remains active. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office.
