Burke County Deputy Honored for Rescuing Child from Henry Fork Waterway

BURKE COUNTY, N.C. — The Burke County Sheriff’s Office is recognizing Deputy Josh Buchanan for his courageous actions in rescuing a child who became stranded in the Henry Fork waterway earlier this year.

On May 20, 2026, Deputy Buchanan responded to a report involving a child who had entered the waterway and was unable to safely make it back to shore.

Recognizing the immediate danger, Deputy Buchanan quickly took action. Without hesitation, he entered the chest-deep waters of the Henry Fork and made his way to the child.

Through his quick thinking, courage, and determination, Deputy Buchanan was able to safely bring the child back to shore and reunite him with his family.

For his actions, which went above and beyond the normal expectations of his duties, Deputy Buchanan was presented with a Letter of Commendation for the Meritorious Conduct Award, along with a ribbon to wear on his uniform.

The Burke County Sheriff’s Office said the recognition reflects Deputy Buchanan’s courage, character, and dedication to protecting and serving the citizens of Burke County.

His willingness to put the safety of another before his own serves as a powerful example of the commitment and selflessness demonstrated by law enforcement officers every day.
