December 3, 1939 — October 25, 2025

Carl Russell Tate (“Pop,” “Papaw Carl”), of Sunshine, born on December 3, 1939, passed away peacefully at home on October 25, 2025, as he wished, surrounded by his loving family. Carl married the love of his life, Malena Tate, and together they shared 66 wonderful years of marriage. He was a loving Pop, Daddy, Papaw Carl, Uncle, and friend whose life was filled with faith, hard work, and love for his family. Carl grew up in Alexander Mills and began working in the cotton mills at the age of 17, where he remained dedicated until his retirement at age 62. He was the proud father of three children: Darlene and her husband Reggie, Aaron and his wife Wanda, and Calvin Tate (Deanna). Carl was blessed with seven grandchildren: Helix Tate (Steven) of Florida, Brittany Farmer (Robbie) of Chapel Hill, Rachel Wellborn (Tyler) of Chesnee, Quinton McKeel (Kaitlynn) of Chesnee, Kyler McGinnis of Forest City, Allie Crowe (Kalup) of Shelby, and Keylon Tate (Brittany) of Forest City, as well as twelve cherished great-grandchildren. Carl is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Elaine Hubbard, Freida Goforth (Johnny), Mary Black, and Joyce Tate, who will always remember his kindness and humor, as well as by many beloved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd (“Shortie”) and Lucy Tate, and his siblings, Leon, Junior, Clifford, and Doris Tate. Carl was of the Baptist faith and a faithful member of Mountain View Baptist Church. Most importantly, Carl loved our Heavenly Father and accepted Jesus into his heart many years ago. He enjoyed holiday meals with his family, watching Western movies, a good Chinese buffet, and collecting and fixing watches, finding joy in giving them to others. In his spare time, he loved to sit on his porch, watch the birds, and tend to his plants, always finding joy in watching things grow. Carl will be missed beyond measure by his wife, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law, and all who knew and loved him. Our hearts ache now, but we rejoice knowing he is pain-free and breathing easy in the presence of our Lord and Savior.
