Eastbound traffic will remain open between Executive Drive and College Avenue during drainage work for the new U.S. 221 interchange.

Westbound traffic on Charlotte Road between Executive Drive and College Avenue will be detoured beginning Sunday, Oct. 11, as crews install drainage structures and piping associated with the new U.S. 221 interchange.

The restriction is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. Sunday and continue through 7 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 20, according to a notice from Rutherfordton Town Manager Doug Barrick.

Eastbound traffic traveling from Rutherfordton toward Spindale will remain open through the work area. Westbound drivers traveling toward Rutherfordton must follow posted detours.

The town identified these recommended routes:

  • Thunder Road

  • Laurel Hill Drive to Promise Lane to Industrial Drive

  • Green Street

  • Mountain Street

The Wright Brothers contractor will perform the work as part of the N.C. Department of Transportation’s R-2233BB project.

Installing the drainage structures and piping requires deep excavations and additional workspace, leaving insufficient room to safely maintain two-way traffic during construction, according to the town.

"Drivers should allow extra travel time, follow posted detour signs, and use caution near the work area," Barrick told WCAB News. The town encouraged residents, businesses, commuters, and visitors who regularly use Charlotte Road to plan for the restriction.
