Cleveland County man arrested for assault on Cherryville police officer

A Cleveland County man is behind bars in Gaston County after assaulting a Cherryville police officer; drugs and a concealed weapon were also in his possession, according to reports.


Wednesday evening, at approximately 6:30 p.m., officers with the Cherryville Police Department responded to a reported civil disturbance at Ronald's Grill, located at 604 W. Church Street, Cherryville, NC.


When officers arrived, they encountered three people engaged in a verbal altercation. During the course of the investigation, one of the subjects, Jeffery Burton Lowery, 24, of the 800 block of Sugar Hill Rd., Lawndale, struck a Cherryville Police Officer in the face. Officers deployed a Taser and took Lowery into custody.


Lowery was transported to the magistrate's office, where warrants were issued for the following charges of Felony Assault on a Government Official; Felony Resist, Delay, and Obstruct a Government Official; Misdemeanor Resist, Delay, and Obstruct a Public Officer; Carrying a Concealed Weapon and Felony Possession of Schedule II (Fentanyl).


Bond information was not available at the time of this release.
