Authorities in Morganton are investigating a deadly shooting that left one person dead and another injured Monday evening on Mount Olive Church Road.

According to the Burke County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to a home in the 4400 block of Mount Olive Church Road on May 19 after receiving a 911 call initially reporting a cardiac arrest. During that call, the caller reportedly stated that someone had been shot. A second caller later informed dispatchers that multiple people had been shot at the location.

When deputies arrived, they discovered two victims suffering from gunshot wounds.

Investigators said one victim had been shot in the leg, while the second victim suffered a gunshot wound to the chest. Emergency crews responded to the scene, but one of the victims was pronounced dead as a result of the injuries.

Officials identified the deceased as 18-year-old Dawson Timothy Whisenant of Morganton. The second victim was identified as 47-year-old Timothy Floyd Whisenant, also of Morganton.

The Burke County Sheriff’s Office said it is continuing to investigate the incident alongside the District Attorney’s Office. At this time, no charges have been filed, and authorities say additional information will be released as the investigation progresses.
