Demolition began yesterday on the Flowering Bridge in Lake Lure, a site many remember as the original bridge connecting Lake Lure and Chimney Rock. The bridge had been transformed into a flowering walkway designed for residents and visitors to enjoy its gardens and find a sense of peace.
Before demolition began, staff and the crew from Mitch Contracting were able to salvage several items, including an antique lamp post, an eagle statue, custom-made hay rack flower boxes, and some of the bridge’s valuable plants. Decorative balustrades and the curved ends of the guardrails will also be preserved for use in the new gardens.
Volunteers who maintain the Flowering Bridge say they remain committed to rebuilding the gardens and continuing community classes, though no timeline has been set for the project’s completion. Despite the loss, organizers say they look forward to welcoming visitors back in the future.
