Do Your Part – Move Over for Emergency Vehicles

The McDowell County Sheriff’s Office is reminding the public of an important responsibility: knowing what to do when an emergency vehicle approaches with flashing lights or an active siren.

When you see or hear an emergency vehicle, take the following steps immediately:

  • Pull over as close as safely possible to the right side of the road

  • Come to a complete stop

  • Remain stopped until all emergency vehicles have passed

  • Stay alert for additional responders—there is often more than one on the way

If you are traveling in the opposite direction on a four-lane highway with a median or physical barrier, you are not required to pull over.

Every second matters in an emergency. Your quick and careful response can help first responders reach those in need faster—and safer.

Let’s all do our part to protect those who protect us.
