In the early hours of August 11, 2025, a brief escape from the Rutherford County Detention Center prompted a large-scale search involving multiple law enforcement agencies.

At approximately 1:54 a.m., Maya Camile Greene, 21, exited the detention center after being served her conditions of release by a magistrate. Greene had been arrested by the Rutherfordton Police Department on an order for arrest for failure to appear and warrants for misdemeanor larceny and resisting a public officer.

According to officials, Greene left through the Magistrate’s Office while the magistrate was occupied providing documents to detention staff and walked toward North Washington Street.

A coordinated search effort quickly followed, involving officers and detectives from the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office, Rutherfordton Police Department, Spindale Police Department, Forest City Police Department, and Rutherford County Fire Marshal/Emergency Management Office.

Around 5:00 a.m., Spindale Police Department officers located Greene, leading to a brief foot chase before she was taken into custody. She was returned to the detention center and is now being held without bond on her original charges along with a new charge of escape from a detention facility. Greene is awaiting her first court appearance.

The Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office expressed appreciation to all agencies and personnel who assisted in her quick recapture.
