MILL SPRING — Another earthquake has shaken a town in western North Carolina.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a 2.7 magnitude earthquake was detected at 11:14 a.m. Wednesday about four miles north of Columbus in the Mill Spring community. The quake occurred at a depth of 3.5 miles, or 5.6 kilometers.

No injuries or damage have been reported.

The USGS noted this was the largest earthquake to strike the Carolinas so far this year. While tremors of this size are usually minor, the agency reports that “moderately damaging earthquakes strike the inland Carolinas every few decades, and smaller earthquakes are felt about once each year or two.”
