Extreme Heat to Grip Rutherford County Through Fourth of July Weekend

RUTHERFORD COUNTY, N.C. — Anyone planning to celebrate Independence Day outdoors in Rutherford County should prepare for one of the hottest stretches of weather so far this summer.

The National Weather Service is forecasting dangerously hot conditions through the holiday weekend, with daytime highs approaching 100 degrees Thursday and remaining in the upper 90s through Saturday. When combined with high humidity, heat index values are expected to climb well into the triple digits.

While sunshine will dominate much of the forecast, isolated afternoon and evening thunderstorms are possible Friday through early next week. The scattered storms could produce brief heavy rain, gusty winds, and dangerous lightning, but widespread washouts are not expected.

The prolonged heat comes as thousands of residents prepare to attend fireworks displays, festivals, parades, and backyard cookouts across Rutherford County. Health officials urge everyone attending outdoor events to take extra precautions by drinking plenty of water, wearing light-colored clothing, applying sunscreen, and taking frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas.

Parents are also reminded to keep children hydrated and never leave children or pets inside parked vehicles, where temperatures can become life-threatening within minutes.

The hot weather is expected to continue into the weekend before temperatures gradually ease early next week. Even then, afternoon highs are expected to remain in the low 90s, with continued chances for scattered thunderstorms.
