Horace “Ray” Butler, age 81, of Ellenboro, passed away Saturday, September 12, 2026 at Hospice of the Carolina Foothills.


Ray was born Monday, January 29, 1945 in Rutherford County to the late Horace Elam Butler and Othene Johnson Butler.  Ray worked forty plus years in construction as an electrician. He loved to play golf; he was also an avid Clemson fan.  Ray will be missed by all who knew and loved him.


In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a son, Bobby Smith.


Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of thirty years Sandi Butler; children, Kim Hamrick (Kenny) of Boiling Springs, NC, Kelly Scruggs (Keith) of Forest City, Gary Woods (Melissa) of Oregon, Johnny Franklin (Michelle), of Ellenboro, Mike Franklin (Bridget) of Rutherfordton; a brother, Johnny Butler (Lynn) of Forest City, a sister, Betty Whiteside of Rutherfordton; fourteen grandchildren, nine great grandchildren; and a best friend, Burgin Champion.


There will be a private gathering for immediate family only at a later date.
