Summary:

On July 25, 2026, at approximately 10:41 p.m., the Burke County Sheriff’s Office responded to 7870 River Rock Road in Hickory in reference to a shooting. The caller stated that there was a fight and that she thought someone was shot. Upon arrival, deputies located a male victim with what appeared to be a gunshot wound to the chest. Life-saving attempts on scene were unsuccessful, and the male was pronounced deceased.

The Criminal Investigations Division responded and conducted an investigation. At the conclusion of the investigation, warrants were issued on Kenneth Lee Potter, 40, of 4281 South Park Ave in Hickory, for unspecified homicide. Potter was taken into custody without incident.

The investigation is ongoing and additional information may be released when it is available. The identity of the victim will be released after the next of kin is notified.
