A man was killed in a crash in Rutherford County as dangerous road conditions persisted during a historic winter storm across North Carolina.

According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the crash happened on U.S. 74 East on Jan. 31 when a Chevrolet pickup truck struck a motor grader that was contracted by the North Carolina Department of Transportation to remove snow. The driver of the pickup was pinned inside the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.

The victim was identified as Brandon Atkins, 55, of Forest City, Highway Patrol officials said.

Troopers reported that three other people were inside the pickup at the time of the crash. All three suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to the hospital.

The crash occurred amid widespread hazardous conditions caused by heavy snow and ice. Parts of western North Carolina received nearly two feet of snow, while extreme cold temperatures kept many roads covered and icy.

Lt. Josh Dowdle with the State Highway Patrol said many secondary roads in western North Carolina remain dangerous despite ongoing cleanup efforts.

“The NCDOT has done a tremendous job clearing the interstates and main thoroughfares throughout western North Carolina,” Dowdle said. “However, many secondary routes remain covered with snow and ice. The extremely cold temperatures we are experiencing will make clearing these routes difficult.”

The Highway Patrol continues to urge drivers to stay home if possible and to use extreme caution if travel is necessary. Motorists are encouraged to check DriveNC.gov for the latest information on road conditions and closures.

State officials said hazardous driving conditions could continue for several more days as temperatures remain below freezing.
