A McDowell County resident has claimed the first $1 million top prize in a new lottery game.
Christopher Davis of Nebo bought a $10 MONOPOLY® scratch-off ticket on Monday and won the game’s first $1 million prize, according to the North Carolina Education Lottery.
Davis purchased the winning ticket at Community Grocery & Hardware on Statesville Boulevard in Cleveland. He arrived at lottery headquarters the same day to claim his prize, accompanied by his mother, Sandra Davis.
Lottery winners can choose between an annuity paid over 20 years or a lump-sum option. Davis selected the lump sum of $600,000. After required state and federal tax withholdings, he took home $432,063.
The $10 Monopoly game debuted in November and offers four $1 million top prizes. Three of those top prizes remain unclaimed.
Lottery proceeds also support education and school construction across the state. In McDowell County, a $15 million lottery-funded grant helped build the new Old Fort Elementary School. Additional information about county-level impacts of lottery funding is available through the lottery’s public impact reports.
