McDowell County Schools Announces Leadership Appointments for the 2026–2027

McDowell County Schools is pleased to announce several leadership appointments for the 2026–2027 school year. These outstanding educators and administrators bring a broad range of experience and a shared commitment to providing exceptional educational opportunities for students across the district.

Mr. Rodney Wheeler Promoted to Director of Transportation

After serving McDowell County Schools in numerous leadership roles, including principal and assistant principal, Mr. Rodney Wheeler has been promoted to Director of Transportation. His extensive administrative experience, organizational skills, and dedication to serving students and families make him well-prepared to lead the district's transportation department.

Mr. Tom Cunningham Named Principal of Old Fort Elementary School

McDowell County Schools is proud to welcome Mr. Tom Cunningham as the new principal of Old Fort Elementary School. With nearly two decades of leadership experience as a superintendent and principal, Mr. Cunningham brings a strong background in instructional leadership, school improvement, and community engagement. He is committed to fostering a positive learning environment where every student can thrive.

Mrs. Caitlin Robinson Named Principal of Pleasant Gardens Elementary School

Mrs. Caitlin Robinson has been named principal of Pleasant Gardens Elementary School. Having most recently served as assistant principal, she has demonstrated a strong commitment to instructional excellence, collaboration, and student achievement. Her leadership experience and passion for building positive school cultures will serve the Pleasant Gardens community well.

Mrs. Katie Kaylor Named Principal of East McDowell Middle School

McDowell County Schools is excited to announce Mrs. Katie Kaylor as the new principal of East McDowell Middle School. Mrs. Kaylor has served as an assistant principal and classroom teacher, earning a reputation as a collaborative instructional leader who is dedicated to supporting students, staff, and families while fostering academic success.

Mr. Hank Hunt Named Assistant Principal of East McDowell Middle School

Mr. Hank Hunt has been named assistant principal of East McDowell Middle School. A longtime McDowell County educator and former assistant principal, Mr. Hunt brings more than 25 years of educational experience and a proven record of instructional leadership, mentorship, and service to the students of McDowell County.

"We are excited to welcome these exceptional leaders into their new roles," said Dr. Tracy Grit, Superintendent of McDowell County Schools. "Each of these individuals has demonstrated a passion for education and a commitment to serving students, staff, and families.
