McDowell County Sheriff Ricky T. Buchanan has announced he will not seek re-election when his current term ends in 2026, marking the conclusion of more than 30 years of service in North Carolina public safety — most of it spent in McDowell County.

In a heartfelt statement, Sheriff Buchanan reflected on his career, describing it as filled with “highs and lows, joy and sorrow, good days and hard days,” but said his love for McDowell County and the state made every sacrifice worthwhile.

“Being Sheriff has been the greatest professional honor of my life,” Buchanan said. “I have been blessed to work alongside professional men and women who come to work every day willing to put their lives on the line for those they serve.”

Buchanan also expressed deep gratitude to his family, especially his wife, Heather, for their constant support throughout his demanding career. “They have allowed me to pursue my dream, knowing I would miss important things to them,” he said.

He explained that his decision to step away followed “much prayer and consideration,” adding that he is proud of the team he has built and confident in their ability to carry the office forward.

“I will not be seeking re-election to the Office of Sheriff,” Buchanan stated. “I plan on finishing my term through 2026 and honoring my commitment. I feel confident that I have honored my promises to the residents and employees of McDowell County, and I’m happy with where I will be leaving this office.”

Looking ahead, Buchanan said he will continue to support public safety and emergency services, even as he steps away from elected office. He also offered his full endorsement to Chief Deputy Nathan Mace as his successor.

“Nathan is ready, willing, and has the heart for public service,” Buchanan said. “He has my full support and endorsement to be the next Sheriff of McDowell County.”

Buchanan closed his announcement by thanking the community for their trust and support throughout his career: “Thank you, McDowell County, for allowing me to serve you.”
