The McDowell County Sheriff’s Office is urging residents to stay away from illegal drugs as a powerful new synthetic opioid emerges in the region.

The warning comes amid reports of cychlorphine, a newer opioid believed to be significantly stronger than fentanyl. The drug has been detected in several states across the U.S., including South Carolina, and has recently been linked to multiple overdose deaths in East Tennessee.

While the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office has not yet confirmed cases of cychlorphine locally, officials say that does not mean the threat isn’t already nearby.

Authorities warn that this substance is often mixed with other illegal street drugs, increasing the risk of overdose—especially for individuals who may not realize what they are taking.

The Sheriff’s Office emphasizes that there is no safe use of illegal street drugs and urges the community to remain vigilant.

“One bad decision can be your last,” said Sheriff Ricky T. Buchanan. “Our message is simple: stay away from illegal drugs. Your life depends on it.”
