The McDowell County Sheriff’s Office has been made aware of a scam circulating today involving an individual claiming to be “Crystal Stokes” with MCSO.
The scammer is contacting residents and threatening them with arrest for missing jury duty. The victim is then instructed to make immediate payment by opening an email attachment provided to them OR immediately go to the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office to turn themselves in.
This is a scam – and a familiar one.

In today’s scam, “Crystal Stokes” was able to provide personal information, including the victim’s name, age, and address, to appear legitimate.
Remember, DO NOT send money or open any attachments and DO NOT provide personal or financial information. Just hang up.
