Daggerhart Music Academy is expanding its facilities in downtown Rutherfordton, taking over additional space in the historic Hill’s Hardware building on North Main Street.
Brandon and Natalie Brett Daggerhart purchased the portion of the building at 182 N. Main Street, historically part of the former Southern Hotel, in November 2025. The space has housed the academy for two years and will now expand into the building’s lower levels to accommodate more classes, private lessons, and performance opportunities.
The expansion will allow the academy to offer a broader range of music instruction, dance classes, and other performing arts programs for students of all ages. The lower level will also include a dedicated performing arts space for recitals, concerts, and community events.
Hill’s Hardware, a long-standing business in Rutherfordton, continues to operate next door at 184 N. Main Street after consolidating its operations. Owner Shellie Heaton said the move allows the store to continue serving the community while maintaining its historic presence.
“Our store will be celebrating 80 years next year, and I’m aiming for 100,” Heaton said.
The original hotel structure was built in 1910 and operated as a lodging establishment until 1947, when it was converted into the hardware store that remains a downtown staple today.
Daggerhart Music Academy provides music education programs for students of all ages and skill levels, while Hill’s Hardware offers tools, plumbing and electrical supplies, and other essentials.
