North Carolina Treasurer Brad Briner has personally paid the first repayment for the Cashflow Loan Program, relieving local governments still recovering from Hurricane Helene of a small administrative task.

The loans, distributed last year to more than 100 communities, carry a nominal $1 repayment this fiscal year. Briner said he wanted to allow officials to focus on ongoing recovery efforts rather than processing paperwork.

“Communities in Western North Carolina need to concentrate their efforts on making themselves whole again, not on jumping through an administrative hoop,” he said.

The Department of State Treasurer administers the program using disaster relief funding provided by the General Assembly. More than $150 million in interest-free loans has been distributed to communities awaiting federal disaster relief funds.
