Summary:

On March 13, 2026, deputies with the Burke County Sheriff’s Office were patrolling the area west of Morganton near Highway 64 in response to numerous complaints, when a vehicle was observed traveling at a high rate of speed.

The driver stopped shortly after turning from Hopewell Road on to Dentons Chapel Road. As the deputy exited the patrol vehicle, the driver fled at a high rate of speed. The deputy returned to the patrol vehicle and continued the attempt to stop the vehicle.

After a short pursuit, the driver stopped in the parking area of a local business. The driver was identified as Charles Ellis Reece. After removing Reece from the vehicle, deputies asked for consent to search the vehicle. Reece stated there was drug paraphernalia and methamphetamine inside the vehicle. A short search of the vehicle confirmed the presence of both items.

Reece was taken into custody and transported to the Burke County Magistrate’s Office, where he was charged with Felony Possession of Methamphetamine, Misdemeanor Speeding, Misdemeanor Reckless Driving – Wanton Disregard, and Misdemeanor Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

Reece was given a $15,000 secured bond, and his first court appearance was March 16, 2026.
