State accepts confidential complaints about fraud, waste and abuse, with options for anonymous tips and supporting documents.

North Carolina residents who suspect fraud, waste or misuse of state resources can submit confidential complaints to the Office of the State Auditor, including anonymous tips.

The office investigates allegations involving state agencies or employees within its legal authority.

Complaints may concern misappropriation or mismanagement of resources, violations of laws or regulations in administering state or federal programs, or substantial and specific dangers to public health and safety, according to its reporting guidance.

People submitting tips should provide enough detail to explain who was involved, what happened, when and where it occurred, how it happened and how much money or other resources were involved.

Reports can be submitted through:

People may remain anonymous, but the office encourages providing contact information so investigators can seek additional details.

According to the auditor’s office, state law requires that tipsters’ identities remain confidential. State law also provides protection against retaliation or discrimination for employees who report improper or illegal activities to the state auditor.
