Nebo Woman Charged After Child in Her Care Tests Positive for Narcotics

A Nebo woman has been charged following an investigation into allegations of child neglect involving a child who tested positive for narcotics.

According to the McDowell County Sheriff's Office, Detective Billie Brown charged 44-year-old Elvia Stamey of Nebo with felony Exposing a Child to a Controlled Substance. Stamey was issued a $75,000 secured bond.

The investigation began on June 16, when Detective Brown received a referral from the McDowell County Department of Social Services regarding concerns that a child in Stamey's care was being neglected.

During the investigation, Detective Brown confirmed the allegations, including evidence that the child had tested positive for narcotics.

Stamey was arrested on July 23 in connection with the investigation and charged with felony Exposing a Child to a Controlled Substance.

As with all criminal cases, the charge is an allegation, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
