Drivers across North Carolina are being reminded to slow down and move over as the statewide “Move Over” enforcement campaign officially begins today.
Law enforcement agencies throughout the state will be increasing patrols and monitoring drivers who fail to follow North Carolina’s Move Over Law — a law designed to protect emergency responders, utility workers, tow truck operators and public service personnel working along roadways.
Under North Carolina law, motorists are required to move over one lane when approaching stopped emergency, law enforcement, public service or utility vehicles displaying flashing lights. If changing lanes is not possible, drivers must significantly reduce their speed while passing the scene.
Officials say the campaign is focused on increasing awareness and preventing roadside tragedies involving first responders and roadside workers who face dangerous conditions every day while assisting motorists and handling emergencies.
The law applies to:
Law enforcement vehicles
Fire and rescue vehicles
EMS units
Tow trucks
NCDOT and utility vehicles
Public service vehicles with flashing lights activated
Drivers who fail to comply with the Move Over Law can face fines and penalties.
Authorities are encouraging everyone to stay alert, avoid distractions and give roadside crews the space they need to work safely.
“Move Over. Slow Down. Save Lives.”
