Drivers in Rutherford County can expect to see road crews at work this summer as a contractor for the North Carolina Department of Transportation begins a $5.9 million resurfacing project on secondary roads across the county.
The project calls for milling, resurfacing, and shoulder reconstruction along approximately 31 miles of roadway. In total, the work includes 17 sections of secondary roads, three school bus drives, and one fire department.
Among the school campuses included in the contract are Rutherfordton Elementary School, R-S Middle School and R-S Central High School. NCDOT scheduled the resurfacing work during the summer months to minimize disruptions to school traffic before students return for the new academic year.
According to a statement from NCDOT, the improvements will provide smoother driving surfaces and more durable pavement designed to extend the life of the roads. The project also includes updated pavement markings to improve visibility for motorists.
Tarheel Paving and Asphalt Co. was authorized to begin work on June 29 under the contract awarded by NCDOT.
Motorists are encouraged to use caution in work zones, reduce speeds, and watch for construction crews and changing traffic patterns as the project gets underway. Completion dates were not immediately announced.
