The Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office is joining a nationwide initiative to help first responders better assist individuals with special needs through a new Special Needs Occupant Sticker program.
The sticker, which can be displayed in homes or vehicles, alerts law enforcement, emergency medical services, and fire personnel that someone inside may have unique communication, medical, mobility, or sensory requirements. Officials say this awareness allows responders to approach situations with patience and appropriate accommodations, enhancing safety for all involved.
The program is designed for people with conditions such as autism spectrum disorder, sensory sensitivities, cognitive or developmental differences, hearing or vision impairments, mobility challenges, or other needs that may affect emergency interactions.
Residents are encouraged to place the sticker near the front entrance of their home or on the rear window of their vehicle so it is clearly visible to first responders. When seen, responders understand that a person may not be able to speak, could become overwhelmed by lights, sirens, or noise, and may require instructions delivered calmly and clearly.
Stickers are available at the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office at 198 North Washington Street in Rutherfordton. Sheriff Aaron Ellenburg also distributes stickers during community events and can be contacted directly for more information.
The initiative reflects a growing national effort to ensure emergency personnel are equipped to respond safely and effectively to all residents, regardless of their needs.
