The Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about an active phone scam targeting people in Western Carolina.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, citizens have reported receiving calls from individuals claiming to be deputies. The callers tell victims they missed jury duty or failed to appear in court for a subpoena, and that a warrant has been issued for their arrest. The scammers then demand payment to avoid being taken to jail.
Officials say the callers are using the names of actual local deputies and spoofing phone numbers to make the scam appear legitimate.
Authorities emphasize that the Sheriff’s Office will never ask for or accept money to prevent an arrest if a warrant exists. Additionally, anyone who is legitimately subpoenaed will receive a copy of the subpoena, which will be delivered to their home.
The Sheriff’s Office advises residents to never provide banking information or purchase gift cards in response to such calls. If you receive one of these calls, hang up immediately and contact the Sheriff’s Office.
