Rutherfordton is receiving statewide recognition in the March issue of Our State Magazine. In the feature “Streets With a Story: Rutherfordton’s Main Street,” writer Rebecca Woltz highlights what makes our downtown so special — it’s far more than just a street. It’s the heart of our community.

For more than two centuries, downtown Rutherfordton has been the place where history has unfolded and where community life continues to thrive. From longtime landmarks to new local favorites, Main Street remains a place where people come together.

Today, visitors and locals alike can gather with friends at Main Street Market, enjoy dinner at The Parcell Exchange, shop at Mill Hill General Store, explore KidSenses Children’s Interactive Museum, stop by Hill’s Hardware & General Store, visit the historic Bechtler House, or take a peaceful walk through history at Rutherfordton City Cemetery.

Each storefront, sidewalk, and building holds a story — and many of those stories belong to the people who have made memories here over the years.

Now we’d love to hear from you:

  • What’s your earliest memory of downtown Rutherfordton?

  • Which local business do you always recommend to visitors?

  • If you could tell one Main Street story, what would it be?

Share your memories in the comments and tag someone who loves downtown Rutherfordton. Let’s show the rest of the state why this street continues to matter.
