South Carolina saw a historic political transition within 48 hours as Gov. Henry McMaster appointed Darline Graham Nordone as the state’s first female U.S. senator following the death of her brother, longtime Sen. Lindsey Graham.

Graham Nordone, who serves as commissioner of the South Carolina Commission for the Blind, will serve as an interim senator through Jan. 3, 2027. Voters will choose Graham’s permanent successor in a special election this fall.

McMaster said the appointment provides continuity while honoring Graham’s legacy.

“It is my honor to ask his little sister, Darline, to finish his work,” McMaster said.

Graham Nordone pledged to continue her brother’s priorities during her short time in office.

“I promise to work hard over the next several months to support the president and carry forward the efforts of my brother on behalf of the citizens of South Carolina and the United States,” she said.

Graham, a Republican senator since 2003, was one of South Carolina’s most prominent political figures, known for his work on national security, military affairs, judicial nominations, and foreign policy.

North Carolina Sen. Ted Budd called Graham “a dedicated public servant and friend,” saying his loss “will be felt immensely in the Senate and around the world.”

For western North Carolina communities along the state line, the change comes as the two regions continue working together on Hurricane Helene recovery, transportation, and economic development.

The two states share major transportation corridors, including Interstate 26, Interstate 85, and U.S. 74, while residents regularly cross the border for jobs, health care, tourism, and commerce.

The upcoming Senate race could influence federal priorities affecting the broader Appalachian region, including infrastructure, disaster recovery, manufacturing, and workforce development.

The Republican special primary is scheduled for Aug. 11, with a runoff Aug. 25 if needed. The general election will be held Nov. 3.
