Town reminds motorists to watch for students, buses as school year begins.

School is back in Rutherford County, and Rutherfordton is reminding motorists to use extra caution as students, teachers and school staff return to their daily routines.

Rutherfordton said in a statement that streets and sidewalks will once again see increased activity as students travel to and from school.

The town's police and fire and rescue departments are urging drivers to slow down, remain alert in school zones, watch for school buses and students, and allow extra time for the morning commute.

Drivers should be especially cautious around schools, bus stops, crosswalks and residential areas where children may be walking or riding bicycles.

Rutherfordton also encouraged students to work hard, be kind, look out for one another and make smart choices as the new school year begins.

The town wished students, teachers, support staff, administrators and families a safe and successful school year.

As school gets back into session, officials are asking everyone on the road to slow down, pay attention and help keep students safe.
