Authorities in Cleveland County are investigating two suspected arson incidents that occurred Friday night, October 17, 2025, at churches in the Casar area. According to the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office, the fires were intentionally set between 9:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. at Tabernacle Baptist Church on Corinth Church Road and Calvary’s Cross Baptist Church on Mt. Zion Church Road.
Deputies responded to the scenes along with local volunteer fire departments and the Cleveland County Fire Marshal’s Office. When first responders arrived, both church properties showed evidence of fire damage consistent with deliberate ignition.
Officials said that in both cases, nearby citizens spotted the fires early and were able to act quickly, putting out the flames before they caused extensive damage to the buildings. Their quick response is being credited with preventing the incidents from becoming more serious.
Investigators from the Fire Marshal’s Office and the Sheriff’s Office are working together to determine how and by whom the fires were set. Evidence is being collected from both locations, and authorities are reviewing any available surveillance footage from the surrounding areas.
Sheriff’s Office representatives emphasized that these incidents are being treated as acts of arson and are a top investigative priority. While no injuries were reported, the incidents have caused concern in the local community, where both churches are active and longstanding places of worship.
Anyone who may have information related to the fires, or who saw suspicious individuals or vehicles in the areas of Corinth Church Road or Mt. Zion Church Road between 9:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. on October 17, is urged to contact the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office at 704-484-4822. Anonymous tips can also be provided to Crime Stoppers at 704-481-8477.
