A McDowell County jury has convicted 41-year-old Joshua Lane Wilson on multiple felony drug charges following a high-profile case stemming from a traffic stop in August 2024.
On December 3, 2025, Wilson was found guilty of two counts of felony trafficking in methamphetamine and possession with intent to manufacture, sell, or deliver a Schedule II controlled substance. Following the verdict, he also entered a guilty plea to Habitual Felon Status.
Wilson was sentenced to a minimum of 176 months and a maximum of 236 months in prison.
The charges originated from an August 2024 traffic stop on U.S. 70 West, where Detective Matt Smith of the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office Community Impact Team discovered 196 grams of methamphetamine, numerous pills in unlabeled prescription bottles, and 24 grams of marijuana. The N.C. State Highway Patrol assisted with the incident.
Chief Deputy Nathan Mace of the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office commended the work of the Community Impact Team and the Drug Enforcement division, noting the importance of collaboration with other agencies in achieving successful outcomes.
“Great results are coming from McDowell Drug Enforcement and our CIT Team,” said Chief Mace. “An overall great job on this investigation by our detectives and staff. Also, a special thanks goes to District Attorney Ted Bell and his staff on this prosecution led by Assistant District Attorney Michael McEnery.”
Authorities say the case highlights ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking in McDowell County and serves as a reminder of the resources and teamwork required to address illegal drug activity in the community.
