The Rutherford County Detention Center recently marked a milestone with the baptism of 34 detainees, including 20 women and 14 men. The event was part of the facility’s broader efforts to offer rehabilitation and reduce recidivism among those in custody.

The baptisms were conducted by Chaplains Jerome Wilkerson and Kriss Landry, who lead faith-based programs at the detention center. Wilkerson described the baptisms as a step toward renewed faith and changed lives.

Sheriff Aaron Ellenburg said the initiative reflects the detention center’s goal of addressing not only the security needs of detainees but also their personal growth. “Our goal is not just to house detainees but to help transform lives,” he said.

Officials noted that the baptisms are one part of ongoing partnerships with local ministries and community organizations. The programs aim to prepare detainees for reintegration into society by addressing spiritual, emotional, and social needs.

The detention center plans to continue building connections with area churches, nonprofits, and leaders to expand initiatives designed to break cycles of incarceration and support healthier communities.
