Candidate filing for North Carolina’s 2026 election cycle closed at noon Friday, Dec. 19, finalizing the field for local, state and federal races that will appear on Rutherford County ballots next year.
Following the close of filing, the North Carolina State Board of Elections conducted its legally required random drawing and coin flip to determine ballot order for statewide and legislative contests. The board drew the letter “F,” then flipped a coin that resulted in reverse alphabetical order. As a result, candidates’ names will appear beginning with last names starting with F, followed by E, D, C, B, A, then Z through G.
Under state law, this randomized order applies to statewide and legislative races in both the primary and general elections. Municipal contests are exempt and will appear in standard alphabetical order. Official candidate lists are available through the state and county boards of elections.
