A Cleveland County paramedic was killed and another was injured after an ambulance was involved in a crash Monday morning in Gaston County.

The collision happened around 8 a.m. on Monday, July 6, on U.S. Highway 74 near the Interstate 85 ramps close to the Gaston-Cleveland county line.

According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the Cleveland County ambulance overturned during the crash, coming to rest on its passenger side. Emergency crews later used a wrecker to return the ambulance to its wheels.

A passenger vehicle with significant damage was also involved in the collision and was removed from the scene on a flatbed truck.

Troopers confirmed that one paramedic died as a result of the crash, while another paramedic was transported to a hospital with injuries. Officials have not yet released the identities of those involved.

The crash forced the closure of the eastbound lanes of Highway 74 for several hours as investigators worked at the scene.

The cause of the collision remains under investigation by the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

More information is expected to be released as the investigation continues.
