Forest City Receives $7.8 Million for Helene Recovery

Forest City will receive nearly $7.8 million in federal funding for a new electric substation to support Hurricane Helene recovery and future economic development.

U.S. Rep. Tim Moore, R-NC, said the Economic Development Administration award totals $7,798,480. His office estimates the project could create 28 jobs and generate more than $9 million in private investment.

The announcement comes as Forest City commissioners advance several development and infrastructure projects.

Council recently approved Royal American Development’s request to rezone property at 0 Lawing Road from M-1 Manufacturing to C-3 Highway Commercial for a multifamily residential development.

Commissioners also voted 3-1 to approve a sewer regionalization study with the Cliffside Sanitary District and McGill Associates.

The board approved more than $1.1 million for unfinished water and sewer projects, including the Arlington Street sewer rehabilitation project, and $132,539 for a boring machine in the Electric Fund.

Town Manager Janet Mason also reported that Forest City submitted an Appalachian Regional Commission grant application for wastewater treatment plant improvements.
