Former Burke County Sheriff’s Office Employee Billy “Jobe” Harbison Passes Away at 70

Billy “Jobe” Harbison, 70, passed away Friday, August 28, 2026, following a period of declining health.

A Burke County native, Harbison was the son of the late Billy and Ellie Franklin Harbison of Drexel. From a young age, he demonstrated a commitment to service and achievement, earning the rank of Eagle Scout.

Harbison dedicated 25 years of service to the Burke County Sheriff’s Office, serving his community in several roles throughout his career. His service included assignments in Animal Control, Detention, Road Patrol, and as Chief Bailiff. He also served as a reserve officer with Morganton Public Safety and the Drexel Police Department.

Outside of his law enforcement career, Harbison was a faithful member of Bethel Church of Christ and a Master Mason with Lovelady Lodge No. 670 A.F. & A.M. in Valdese.

Known affectionately by friends as “Jobe,” “Hobbs,” “Hobby,” and “Ja-bay,” he was remembered for his sense of humor and his ability to bring laughter and warmth to those around him. He also enjoyed spending time outdoors, particularly fishing with Gary and Jeff Coffey, and making trips to Kiawah Island, South Carolina.

Harbison is survived by his lifelong companion, Kay Rhodes; her sons, Shane Rhodes and Chad Rhodes; cousins Martha Howell, Julie French, and Jennifer Fulbright; and beloved friends Brooks and Amanda Holder.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Linda Harbison Schmit, along with other family members.

Friends and family will be received from 5 p.m. until 6 p.m. Friday, September 4, 2026, at Sossoman Funeral Home. A celebration of life will follow at 6 p.m. in the funeral home's Colonial Chapel, with Pastor Richard Via officiating.

A private family burial will be held, with Masonic Rites provided by Lovelady Lodge No. 670 A.F. & A.M.

Jobe Harbison will be remembered for his years of service to the community, his love for the outdoors, and the laughter and kindness he shared with those who knew him.

Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with arrangements.
