A Heat Advisory is in effect for McDowell County from noon until 8:00 p.m. today, as dangerously hot and humid conditions are expected across the area.

Forecasters say the combination of high temperatures and humidity could push the heat index as high as 107 degrees, increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Health officials encourage everyone to drink plenty of water throughout the day, limit outdoor activities during the hottest afternoon hours, and spend time in air-conditioned buildings whenever possible. Residents are also asked to check on elderly neighbors, family members, and anyone without access to adequate cooling.

Parents and pet owners are reminded never to leave children or animals unattended in a vehicle, even for a short time. Temperatures inside a parked car can become deadly within minutes.

Signs of heat exhaustion include heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, nausea, headache, muscle cramps, and cool, clammy skin. If these symptoms occur, move the person to a cooler location, provide water if they are conscious, and loosen tight clothing.

If someone becomes confused, loses consciousness, stops sweating despite the heat, or has a body temperature above 103 degrees, they may be experiencing heat stroke, which is a medical emergency. Call 911 immediately.

The Heat Advisory remains in effect until 8:00 p.m. Residents are encouraged to take the heat seriously and practice heat safety throughout the day.
