RUTHERFORD COUNTY, N.C. — A narcotics investigation by the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office ACE Team led to a vehicle pursuit that crossed into South Carolina and resulted in multiple drug trafficking charges.

On Wednesday, September 9, investigators were conducting surveillance in the area of Hines Road in response to recent narcotics complaints.

During the investigation, deputies observed a burgundy Nissan Titan leaving the area that matched the description of a vehicle referenced in the complaints. Investigators attempted to stop the vehicle at the intersection of Highway 221 South and Riverstone Drive after observing multiple traffic violations.

The driver, later identified as Glenn Alexander Barrs Jr., reportedly failed to stop and fled, initiating a vehicle pursuit.

The pursuit continued southbound on Highway 221 South and crossed into South Carolina before eventually ending on Vassey Road in Cherokee County, South Carolina.

After the vehicle stopped, Barrs reportedly fled on foot into a wooded area. Investigators pursued him, and he was eventually apprehended in an open field.

Following his arrest, investigators reported finding suspected methamphetamine, fentanyl, crack cocaine and marijuana in Barrs’ possession.

Because the pursuit ended in South Carolina, Barrs was taken into custody by the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office. He was subsequently charged in South Carolina with:

  • Trafficking Fentanyl

  • Trafficking Crack Cocaine

  • Possession with Intent to Manufacture, Sell or Deliver Marijuana

Barrs is expected to be extradited back to Rutherford County at a later date, where he is expected to face additional charges, including:

  • Felony Flee to Elude Arrest

  • Trafficking Fentanyl by Possession

  • Trafficking Fentanyl by Transportation

  • Trafficking Methamphetamine by Possession

  • Trafficking Methamphetamine by Transportation

  • Possession with Intent to Manufacture, Sell or Deliver Cocaine

  • Speeding

The Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office thanked the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office and the South Carolina Highway Patrol for their assistance during the incident.
