Old Fort woman faces meth trafficking charge

An Old Fort woman faces three felony drug charges after McDowell County sheriff’s deputies responding to a report of a possible assault involving a firearm said they recovered 50 grams of methamphetamine.

Chandra Danielle McCool, 32, is charged with trafficking in methamphetamine; possession with intent to manufacture, sell or deliver methamphetamine; and possession of methamphetamine, according to the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded to McCool’s residence Sept. 20. McCool told them two people had previously been standing near the woodline outside her home, the sheriff’s office said.

Deputies did not locate the reported firearm. While speaking with McCool, they noticed a large object stuffed into the front pocket of her sweatshirt, authorities said.

According to the sheriff’s office, McCool refused a request to remove the object. Deputies then searched her and recovered what authorities described as 50 grams of methamphetamine.

McDowell District Court records list Sept. 22 as the date of McCool’s arrest and the filing of all three charges. The pending case is 26CR413339-580.

McCool was issued a $100,000 secured bond. The provided court records do not establish whether she posted bond.

She had a first appearance on Sept. 23. Court records show Judge A. Michelle McEntire entered an order assigning counsel that day.

A probable cause hearing is scheduled for Oct. 14 at the McDowell County Courthouse.

The sheriff’s office announced the charges Sept. 30, eight days after the arrest listed in court records.

The charges are allegations. McCool is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
