Rutherford County to Celebrate America's 250th Anniversary with Daylong Independence Day Events

Rutherford County is preparing for a historic Independence Day celebration as communities across the county come together to commemorate America's 250th Anniversary on Saturday, July 4.

The countywide celebration, presented through a partnership between the Town of Rutherfordton, Rutherford County Government, the Rutherford County Tourism Development Authority, neighboring municipalities, and numerous community organizations, will feature patriotic ceremonies, family-friendly entertainment, sporting events, and a fireworks spectacular.

The celebration officially begins at 10 a.m. in downtown Rutherfordton with the unveiling of the Overmountain Men Memorial Statue at the intersection of North Main Street and Court Street.

The monument honors the patriot militia whose victory at the Battle of Kings Mountain played a pivotal role in the American Revolution and forever connected western North Carolina to the nation's fight for independence.

Activities will continue throughout the day at Isothermal Community College, where the American Jet Sport Association (AJSA) Southern Summer Series will provide high-energy watercraft competition and entertainment for spectators.

The day's festivities will conclude with Rutherford County's official America 250 Fireworks Spectacular, scheduled to begin at approximately 9:30 p.m.

One of the premier public viewing locations will be Legacy Soccer Park in Forest City, where gates will open at 6 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets and lawn chairs while enjoying music from Sound Connection, frozen treats from Sunset Slush, and concessions provided by the Rutherford County Soccer Association.

Organizers say the celebration represents a collaborative effort made possible through partnerships with Isothermal Community College, the American Jet Sport Association, Explore Forest City, local municipalities, Rutherford County Government, and numerous community sponsors.

Officials say the event is designed not only to honor the nation's 250-year history but also to celebrate the spirit of service, unity, and community that continues to define Rutherford County.

Residents and visitors alike are invited to spend Independence Day throughout Rutherford County for what organizers describe as "One County. One Celebration. 250 Years."
