Rutherford County Department of Social Services and the Rutherford County Senior Center will host a World Elder Abuse Awareness Day event on Monday, June 15, to help educate residents about the warning signs of elder abuse and ways to protect vulnerable adults.
The event will begin at 10 a.m. at the Rutherford County Senior Center, located at 193 Callahan Koon Road in Spindale, and is open to the public.
World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) was established in 2006 to raise awareness about the abuse, neglect and exploitation of older adults and to encourage communities to take action to protect seniors.
According to information provided by Rutherford County DSS, elder abuse can take many forms, including financial, emotional, physical and sexual abuse. It also includes neglect by caregivers and self-neglect. Factors such as social isolation, financial stress, emotional challenges and dementia can increase an older adult's vulnerability.
County officials said current data indicate that approximately one in six older adults worldwide experiences some form of abuse each year. However, many cases go unreported, with estimates suggesting that only one in 24 incidents is ever reported to authorities.
Financial exploitation remains one of the fastest-growing forms of elder abuse. National estimates indicate older Americans lose between $2.6 billion and $28.3 billion annually to financial abuse. The average loss reported by victims of elder fraud in 2024 was approximately $83,000, a 43% increase from the previous year.
Family members are most often identified as perpetrators, accounting for about 60% of elder abuse cases, according to statistics cited by DSS.
Abuse can occur in a person's own home, the home of a relative or within long-term care facilities. County officials noted that approximately one in 10 Americans age 60 and older has experienced some form of abuse. Reports from nursing home residents also indicate significant concerns, with many reporting abuse or witnessing neglect.
Officials emphasize that anyone can report suspected elder abuse, neglect, self-neglect or exploitation. Proof is not required before making a report.
"If you know of an adult in immediate danger, dial 911," DSS officials said.
Residents who suspect elder abuse can contact Rutherford County DSS at 828-287-6165. The agency's Adult Services Unit operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, throughout the year to respond to reports involving vulnerable adults.
Organizers say the June 15 event will provide information and resources to help individuals recognize abuse, protect themselves and their loved ones, and learn how to respond when concerns arise.
County officials encourage residents to attend and learn how they can help prevent elder abuse and support older adults in the community.
World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is observed annually on June 15 around the globe. Organizers say protecting older adults is a responsibility shared by the entire community.
