Rutherfordton Hot Car Demonstration Highlights Deadly Summer Risk

A hot car safety demonstration in downtown Rutherfordton on June 29 showed just how quickly a parked vehicle can become deadly.

During the Rutherfordton event, SAFE KIDS Rutherford Polk displayed a vehicle on Main Street that reached an interior temperature of 138 degrees, underscoring the dangers of leaving children or pets unattended in cars during summer weather.

Safety advocates say a child's body heats up three to five times faster than an adult's, and temperatures inside a parked vehicle can rise by as much as 20 degrees in just 10 minutes — even when outdoor temperatures are relatively mild.

The demonstration comes as preventable hot car deaths continue to occur across the country. According to data cited by organizers, 31 children died from heat stroke in vehicles in the United States in 2025.

Experts warn that cracking a window or parking in the shade does little to reduce the risk. Heat stroke can occur when a child's body temperature reaches 104 degrees, with temperatures above 107 degrees potentially proving fatal.

Organizers urged parents, caregivers and pet owners to adopt a simple rule: never leave a child, vulnerable adult or animal inside a parked vehicle — not even for a minute.
