The McDowell County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a new surge in text message and phone call scams claiming you owe real or personal property taxes. It’s a scheme the community has seen before, but scammers continue to push harder — and officials want everyone to stay alert.

Scammers are sending urgent texts and making calls from fake numbers that are not connected to the McDowell County Tax Collection Office. These messages often claim immediate payment is required or that legal action is pending.

Officials stress that the Tax Office will never request payment through text message or an unexpected phone call.

Residents are urged not to respond, send money, or share personal information. To verify any tax-related claim, call the McDowell County Tax Collections Office directly at (828) 652-0701, ext. 2304.

If you believe you’ve been targeted or fallen victim to a scam, contact the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office at (828) 652-2235 during office hours or (828) 652-4000 after hours. Stay vigilant, McDowell County.
