One person was injured Tuesday night after a shooting at 279 New Hampshire Street, according to Spindale Police Chief Chad Nazelrod.

Officers responded to reports of gunfire near the intersection of New Hampshire Street and Ledbetter Road on Nov. 19. Nazelrod said the initial investigation indicates the incident began as a domestic situation that turned physical.

One individual was taken to the hospital in "unstable condition," Nazelrod said in an email to WCAB News. Their name is being withheld until next of kin can be notified.

Police have one person in custody, though Nazelrod emphasized that the investigation remains active. No charges had been announced as of early Wednesday. Nazelrod said there is no ongoing threat to the public. A more detailed press release is expected as the investigation progresses.

The shooting comes just days after a tense moment at Monday’s Spindale Town Council meeting, where Mayor Nancy Walker asked Chief Nazelrod what the town could do to curb recent gun violence.

“People have a gun and just decide to shoot, don’t they?” Walker said. “Yes,” Nazelrod replied. Police cannot predict or prevent every violent incident. The mayor expressed frustration about rising violence in residential areas.

Police ask anyone with information about Tuesday night’s shooting to contact the Spindale Police Department. A man was previously shot in the leg in an unrelated incident, and investigators are still attempting to identify the suspect(s) in that case.
