MONROE, N.C. — A Union County grandmother is celebrating after winning a top prize from a North Carolina Education Lottery scratch-off ticket purchased at a Monroe grocery store.
Vivian Legette bought a $5 Jungle Cashworld scratch-off ticket from the Food Lion on East Roosevelt Boulevard in Monroe and quickly realized she may have struck it lucky.
“At first I thought I won $5,000,” Legette said. “Then my granddaughter checked it for me, and she said, ‘Grandma, you’ve got 10 numbers!’”
That’s when the excitement kicked in.
“I started jumping up and down,” Legette said with a laugh. “I bought that one because I like crosswords and it just came out.”
Lottery officials said Legette claimed her winnings on May 7 and took home $108,016 after taxes. The grandmother says she plans to use the money to pay bills and help support her family.
The Jungle Cashworld game is one of the North Carolina Education Lottery’s newer scratch-off games and offers several top prizes statewide.
