Severe winter weather continues to disrupt daily life across McDowell and Rutherford counties and much of Western North Carolina, prompting widespread closures and delays on Monday, Jan. 26. As of 12:15 a.m., the North Carolina Judicial Branch reported courthouse closures or schedule changes in 77 counties statewide, with Western North Carolina heavily affected.

Courts in McDowell and Rutherford counties, along with neighboring counties across the western region, are closed for the day due to hazardous road conditions and weather-related safety concerns. Judicial officials note that any court session canceled because of inclement weather will be rescheduled. Those with questions may visit NCCourts.gov for details, contact their county clerk of court, or their attorney for further guidance.

Weather impacts extend beyond the court system. Non-emergency government services are closed across much of the area, including multiple county offices and municipal buildings. Officials say closures are intended to reduce travel during dangerous conditions and allow emergency crews to focus on public safety.

Education has also been widely affected. Most public school districts have canceled in-person classes for Monday. Some districts have shifted to remote learning, while others have declared a full weather day off due to icy roads and scattered power outages. Several colleges and universities in the region have also canceled classes. Check your school's website for more details.

Residents across the region are urged to avoid unnecessary travel, remain weather-aware, and monitor official county, school, and court announcements as winter conditions continue.
